Frontline Endgame - Aids in Black America 2012

Customer Reviews
This Frontline episode was twice as long as their usual episodes. Consequently, they are quite comprehensive in their coverage. They begin by asking if race was identified when the disease was first detected in 1981. The conclude by asking, "What is our endgame?", i.e., will the Black community develop post-AIDS identities now that HAART treatment can keep people alive for decades.

The most famous HIV-positive African-American person is Magic Johnson and he is interviewed here. Luckily he reminds viewers that he is still positive because years ago I did hear that some of us Blacks were saying, "Magic is still alive, so there must be some cure out there!" The program is diverse in terms of showing Blacks of various sexual orientations and genders.

The work also underlines how severe the epidemic is in our community. One expert said if Black America were its own country, it would have the 16th highest HIV rate of all nations in the world. In the Capitol where a Black family lives in the White House, the HIV rate in DC is between five to eight percent of all Black adults.

The program was intelligent and well-done. It may feel cursory to some, but again, they gave this issue twice as much coverage as they do other issues. They fault Southern states that require only abstinence can be taught as an HIV prevention tool. You hear crazy interviewee statements like, "I thought those AIDS drugs only work on gay people." They mention how the Tuskegee study tragedy still has a chilling effect on Black Americans regarding health care issues.

This work would be a great discussion piece in high school classrooms and in community centers across the nation.

Every ten minutes someone in the US contracts HIV and nearly half of the one million people in the United States infected with HIV are black men women and children. Endgame: AIDS in Black America is a groundbreaking two-hour exploration of one of the country's most urgent preventable health crises. The film traces the history of the epidemic through the experiences of extraordinary individuals who tell their stories.
